  • Full Form : UMMID:- (Unique Methods of Management and treatment of Inherited Disorders).
  • Objective:The new initiative aims to raise awareness among clinicians about genetic disorders and to create molecular diagnostics in hospitals so that patients can benefit from advances in medical genetics.
  • Bodies involved: Department of Biotechnology (DBT),M/o Science and Technology has started the UMMID Initiative.
  • Strategy: The UMMID project aims at developing NIDAN Kendras to provide counselling, prenatal testing and treatment, management and multidisciplinary care in government hospitals where there is greater influx of patients, creating skilled human genetics clinicians, and undertake screening of pregnant women and new born babies for inherited genetic diseases in hospitals at aspirational districts.


The Ministry of Road Transport Highways reiterated the need to link all vehicle information to the VAHAN registry to avoid harassment and harm to people under the revised Motor Vehicles.

  • Last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the system from Ranchi, Jharkhand, on September 23, 2019.
  • The main aim of the scheme is to provide universal health care to the poor, needy and vulnerable sections of the country.
  • The scheme provides a health cover of five lakh rupees annually to vulnerable families and aims at benefiting more than ten crore poor families all over the country.

Achievements during last one year:-

  • Over the past year, under the scheme worth some 7,500 crore, more than 46 lakh beneficiaries have used cashless treatment with 60 percent of the amount spent on tertiary care.

  • This has resulted in the savings to the beneficiary families of over 12,000 crore rupees.

  • About 18,000 hospitals across the country offer services, of which more than 50% are private hospitals.
